Books. movies and tv series to use for inspiration?

Postby Ashkelion-Yvarai » Tue Sep 16, 2008 3:24 pm

I would like to put together a list of books, movies and tv series that could inspire "Houses of the Blooded"

So far I have:
- Ellen Kushner: Swordspoint. A novel of manners.
- Ellen Kushner/Delia Sherman: The Fall of the Kings.
- Ellen Kushner: Privilege of theSword.
All three books take place in the City. Nobles hire Swordsmen to fight their duels and there is a lot of romance and intrigue going on.

- Anne Bishop: The Black Jewels Trilogy.
The books have Blooded, jewelry, magic, style and intrigue.

- George R.R. Martin: A Song of Ice and Fire series.
Intrigue, warfare, and ancient magic.
"No rulebook has deserved the name 'rules bible' more than 'Houses of the Blooded'." (a friend about all the discussions, corrections and additions to the HotB rules on the forums and in our gaming group)

I too have found the "Song of Ice and Fire" series to be a great inspiration. In fact, I sold one of my players on HotB by describing it as "Game of Thrones, but all the players are Lannisters!"

My own game has been influenced by Chinese Wuxia films (or as I like to call them, "Sword Operas"). "The Bride With White Hair," "The Storm Riders," "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon," "Warriors of Zu Mountain." These movies always feature tortured romances and tragic deaths. The sword duels are pretty spiffy too.

Good call on the Chinese Wuxia films. Beautiful, romantic, and traggic. A great movie that I think of when I think of Ven parties is Dangerous Liaisons. You gotta love John Malkovich in this. :)

This would fit more with the new book John is writing currently but:

The Lies of Lock Lamora

Think Ocean's Eleven in the Venetian Renaissance - throw in a bit of Oliver Twist and a dash of the Godfather and you have it. Nothing like taking a Blooded for everything he owns! ^_^

Zelazny's Amber series (the first series anyway) - the maneuvers (and to a lesser extent the murder rules) seem tailor made for several of the combats in the series. (Though I may have missed the thread that already notes this.) I could see the fit with the Corwin/Eric duel in the library and the Corwin/Gerard outdoor "fight" as I was reading the maneuvers (and that's one reason for me to keep them for now - extra system and all).

The Hidden Fortress - I just saw a color version of this on a plane flight - not sure when it was colorized. Seems like a natural fit for slumming.

Really? Lannisters sure, but I also get serious Stark, Arynn, Martell, Baratheon, Tyrell, & Targaryen vibes from the Ven. The Tully seem way too tame and bland, and the Greyjoys on the other hand lack anything resembling art or a subtle hand (orkish, very).

To state state the obvious: the Dune series of novels.

Also, while not fantasy, the short-lived TV show "Profit" is wonderful.

I have to get a copy of that. People keep telling me that I'd love it.

Elements of Gladiator strike me as rather ven-esque, although certainly not the whole thing.
