Costuming for the Game

Postby wunderworks » Wed Oct 07, 2009 12:58 pm

So I've been spending hours trying to figure out the first costume for my character that I will be playing at RinCon - Calaban Ru. He has a distinct Middle Eastern/Ottoman Turk/Alhazrd the Mad Arab sort of flavor to him so I'm working a costume that would fit for that.

I'm going to start simple, so I already researched a bunch of turban tying styles - I was amazed that I knew a few already, and I have some scarfs that will work right now for my turban - as I am going for a more Bedoin style of turban than an Sikh or Ottoman style.

Also, I am looking for an inexpensive costume and I found this outfit! HOLY COW! $40 for the whole thing (except the shoes!)

But then I found shoes too!

So for about $80 I have an entire outfit for my character and I researched actual turbans - it would cost about $30 for a real turban from an excellent producer of turbans: http://www.gosikh.com. I found a website that is based in India and it ran about $2.00 US for a turban, but I was definitely not sure about ordering from them.

Of course, I think I might go for more elaborate or interesting outfits sometime soon - something that isn't nec. red (Revenge!), and I found a seamstress that is a SCAdian and Rennie who specializes in Ottoman Turk costuming. She's in NY state and has some excellent examples. I'll send her info to any of you if you're interested.

That's awesome!

I'm gonna meet Calaban on Saturday! :)

Unfortunately, I won't have the authentic costume until next Tuesday, but I have a stand-in for now. ALSO, I found enough fabric to make my turban at Goodwill for seven bucks! Midnight blue - in this style: The Turban of Alhazrd(or more historically the Bedoin).

That's cool. Too bad you won't have a great bushy beard like the guy in the video! ;)

By the way, will you bring "the sword" for me to use at the LARP, please? :D

Yes, but it's not that great to throw around - I need to get the pommel repaired - it's loose.

In the event that I actually get to play a Blood and Tears game (as opposed to running one myself, which given my gaming group is likely my cursed, inevitable fate) I'll be re-using one of my costumes from the Boffer LARP I play in. I think it fits for the Serpant Q'val thats been brewing in my head for a LARP character. (I'm the person in the center of the picture, BTW. I have another curse that dictates that there will never be a decent picture taken of me at a LARP.)

This last item won't be ready for the first game, and the first outfit should be here in time, but I can't guarantee it. @_@

Oh, also these:
